The Birth of a Radio Dream

"A Live NUS Radio Station with Speakers strategically located all over NUS to do live broadcast by our very own student deejays!"

In July 2002, “NUS Deejay Club” started with a dream by Daowei to build a Live Campus Radio Station and train aspiring radio deejays. A proposal was written and re-written for more than a hundred times.

With the help of Dr Joseph Peters and a recording facility from NUS, a small team started experimenting with Radio Programme ideas, writing scripts, doing recordings and using sound editing software.

By Dec 2002, a committee of 17 students was formed.

"A simple yet powerful vision to mean so much more to all of us in the years to come. NUS Students’ Deejay Group started with a dream, a great and noble dream for NUS. I dreamt of a NUS live Radio Station with speakers strategically located all over the campus to do live broadcast by our very own NUS student deejays. I dreamt of the music, dedications, student voices and happiness that this Radio Station can bring to all in NUS. I dreamt of a NUS Radio Station that would accompany you through your sad, lonely and happy moments in NUS. I dreamt of these memories of NUS Radio Station as the most memorable and wonderful part of each and every individuals’ life in NUS. I dreamt of making NUS a home for each and everyone in NUS, through the warmth and magic that this NUS Radio Station can bring. I dreamt of Deejay Group being so special and so great that every student in NUS would do anything to contribute and be part of us. I dreamt of many aspiring deejays becoming one and fulfilling their personal dreams. I dreamt of musicians thanking Deejay Group for bringing their music to a national, regional and global audience. A dream to pass down to future generations of Deejay Group until this becomes a reality. A dream that will bring wonders and magic to each and everyone’s life in NUS…

In Jul 2002, I was touring around the parks in Tongji University in Shanghai. I heard student voices, dedications and music in the air. It was such a pleasant and homely feeling. NUS never gave me this feeling before.. and I was wondering...

Before I went Shanghai, my friend (Huixian) told me that her dream was to become a deejay.

*Fusion!* Suddenly, all these instances FUSE together. And I thought, "We should have a Radio Station in NUS!"

I kept thinking... If I don't do it, who will? Who can? 10 years down the road, NUS will still be the same!!! I wanted to build an NUS home for everyone.. A place with meaningful feelings and memories.. I wanted to help aspiring deejays fulfill their dreams.. I wanted to build a powerful Radio for NUS.. Emotion connects.. Music connects.. Music has no boundaries.. Words touch souls.. I wanted an NUS home! Little did I realize, while I was doing this, NUS really become my home.. because a little baby called NUS Radio Pulze was born..."

The Pioneering (1st) Committee

NUSSDJG

On 13th Feb 2003, NUS recognized us as an official NUS Students’ Interest Group! And hence renamed as “NUS Students’ Deejay Group”

We started “Basic Training Course” to develop basic skills required of all deejays (recording, scripting, editing..etc) sparking off their journey in Deejay Group.

10 teams were established to serve different functions of the club. (Presidential, Special Effects, Music Programmes, Special Programmes, Human Resource..etc)

Within a year, the club expanded to over 70 members!

It was a year we explored: strengthening the vision and core functions, establishing the basic framework, missions and values of the club, in preparation of an up and coming NUS Campus Radio Station.

We realized that Passion was the key.

The “Live Deejay Team” was eventually created, only those we felt were most suited to be on-air were invited into this team.

The 2nd Committee

For almost half a year(Jan to May 2004), we stimulated a “Live Radio” environment with The Live Deejay Team doing “Live Radio Shows” in our studio. The project was successfully completed with 18 CDs. This gave us huge assurance and confidence to start our future Radio.

We started “Events Hosting” and was invited to host the NUS Commencement 2004.
Radio Pulze idea was eventually introduced to NUS President, Prof Shih. He was excited and has since become one of our most loyal and inspiring supporters.

Plans for an official NUS Radio Launch were on its way.

The 3rd Committee

We supported NUS Talent Quest 2005 & Rock On Singapore 2005.

We hosted NUS Centennial Commencement 2005, Baybeats 2005, The NUS Centennial Entrepreneurship Award (CEA) Ceremony, teamNUS Sports Awards 2005 and Singapore Street Festival 2005 .

Lotus-lee Chin, our Radio Pulze Alumni Vice-President, NUSic Founder (Singapore Talents Series) & Media Officer was the proud recipient of Singapore Street Festival (SSF) 2005 Tribute Award to Singapore’s Best for her role in creating the Singaporean Music and Arts series, “NUSic” and promoting Singaporean Talents as well as her contributions to SSF 2004 and SSF 2005.

The 4th Committee and the Official Launch of NUS Radio Pulze

4th ex-co

On 14th Feb 2006, NUS very own campus radio station finally launches! Our biggest supporter, NUS President Professor Shih Choon Fong was the guest-of-honour at this milestone event. Attended by the NUS Heads and directors of faculties and departments, student leaders & alumni members, the launch dazzled audiences with a spectacular countdown to our first official broadcast, followed by performances by our very own NUS campus-grown talents.

DJ Shan Wee of the national radio station 987FM also made a special guest appearance. The launch was also attended by some of the most influential national and regional media such as Channel News Asia and Mediacorp Radio.

This event marked the start of the station’s daily broadcast on campus via the NUS Intranet, reaching out to the entire NUS community and the alumni.

Watch Radio Pulze on Channel News Asia.

Radio Pulze is the official Radio Station for NUS BlogFest 2006.

Radio Pulze goes Global: Radio Pulze was the only Singaporean campus radio station invited by International BBC Radio 4 to showcase our programmes and talents on their programme series “A World In Your Ear” hosted by Rosie Goldsmith.

Radio Pulze collaborated with Singapore Street Festival 2006 once again but this time with more crucial supporting roles such as Emcees, DJs and music journalists.

We hosted Philips Singapore Cup 2006, GotSkype, NUS Breakers Day 2006, NUS Sports Bazaar II 2006, NUS Annual Mass Swim Meet – Splashdown 2006.. etc.

Founder of Lonely Planet, Mr Tony Wheeler, visited our NUS Radio Pulze studio and did an interview programme with us! We also organized and hosted a book-signing event at NUS Arts Forum to help promote his new book “The Lonely Planet Story”.
